Kampanye Restorasi Hutan Berbasis Masyarakat Dalam Rangka Bonn Challenge

Category:

————————————————————————————————–

Thousands hectare of our lands and forest have been used for industrial plantations, for the production of commodities like pulp and paper and oil palm to supply international markets. Those plantations often were developed without our knowledge or consent. In most cases, these projects have not benefitted us. In fact they have led to the loss of our livelihoods and traditions, to the loss of our forests and animals and exacerbated climate change.

There is an urgent need to address these problems and to remedy these past harms and restore our forest and peatland ecosystems. We welcome and strongly support the initiative of our government and international community and the mission of the  Bonn Challenge to restore our forest and peatlands. However, let’s learn from the past. We must not   make the same mistakes of failing to involve the people who have rights to the land and forest and who live and depend on these lands and forests.. We cannot fail to give them  clear information in advance or to get their consent for decisions that will affect their lives.

For all restoration efforts, we are calling on our government, the private sectors and the international community   to consult with us and our advisors and fully involve us in decision making. We must participate in the design and implementation of  restoration. We must benefit from it.  We urge that  social safeguards, respect for our rights and the resolution of land conflicts are preconditions for all restoration initiatives. We must be informed, consulted and we must participate and give our consent.
